The land with lots of stories even from the pre-historic times. Then there is ritual art which comes into mind with Kannur, Kolathunadu’s private pride – Theyyam!
The sacred groves, called Kavus during the Theyyam season turns into a paradise for history seekers, photographers, and art enthusiasts.
Theyyam – from Daivam is synonymous with deity. But, along with the Gods from Puranas, Theyyams are also from folklores.
The deities include yesteryear heroes – males and females alike, those who righteously challenged feudalism, and even those who were killed in deceit by the feudal landlords…Thus Theyyams also represented the aspirations of the people and is the reason why this art is the emotion of Kolathunadu beyond the caste and religion.

Treat your eyes watching Chamayam – the makeover of the Theyyams. Learn the history of each Theyyam from Thottampattu – lore songs. Then indulge yourselves in the magic of Theyyam performance which sometimes becomes breathtaking.
And that’s not just one, but 10 Theyyams together. Which include – Kandanar Kelan Theyyam which takes revenge on fire by walking on it, Kudiveeran Theyyam that shows off the steps of Kalari and the Silver eyes Wayanattu Kulavan Theyyam. - Payyanur is well connected by trains and buses from all parts of Kerala.
- Direct buses are available from Bangalore and Chennai.

Important Notes About Theyyam
- Theyyam timings are not exact and may change depending on ritual practices.
- Theyyam is a sacred ritual performance. What you will witness is the actual ritual, not a staged or capsule performance.
- Local people are deeply devotional, and we expect all travelers to respect local traditions and sentiments.
- Participants must dress modestly and appropriately.
During the Theyyam Ritual
- You are required to stay at the Kaavu (ritual location) throughout the night.
- Vehicle service will NOT be available to return to the hotel until the mentioned scheduled time.
- If any traveler wishes to return to the hotel earlier, it must be arranged personally and additional driver charges will apply.
Kids Participation
- Kids are allowed to join the trip.
- Fees for kids are the same as adults.
- Kids must also stay late at night at the Kaavu.
- No night transportation will be provided to return to the hotel.
Food & Accommodation
- Dinner on Day 1 will be temple prasadam (simple Kerala-style food).
- You will have dinner along with local devotees, standing in the queue.
- Accommodation will be in Deluxe AC rooms near Payyanur.
- Hotel check-in time: 2:00 PM
- Early check-in is subject to availability and may require additional payment.
Photography & Videography Policy
- This is NOT a photography tour.
- If photography or videography disturbs the ritual or performers, it will be strictly restricted by the organizers.
- Let your eyes be the lens and your heart the recorder—experience the performance directly, not only through a phone or camera.
Day 2 Instructions
- If you feel sleepy or do not wish to visit the Theyyam Kaavu on Day 2, you may:
- Rest at the hotel
- Checkout as per the hotel’s standard checkout time
- The group will continue to the Theyyam Kaavu as scheduled.
- Even after reaching the Kaavu, if you wish to leave at any time, you may do so by taking an auto at your own cost.
- The scheduled drop time is fixed and will not be modified based on individual preferences.

- All expenses incurred due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances like roadblocks and bad weather

- If you plan to return Back to Hotel during night time, extra vehicle charges( Getting vehicle at night is tough from Theyyam kaavu)
Note : Day 2: Sunset Kayaking in Kowayai, Payyanur
If you'd like to explore sunset kayaking, you can book a late-night train for convenience. Please note that kayaking will depend on the water level and will incur an additional cost ( transport+ Kayaking charges ). . Further details will be discussed in the WhatsApp group created for this trip.

Cancellation Policy
A participant will be refunded his/her paid fees after deducting the following cancellation fees.

- Alternatively, a registered participant may transfer his/her registration to a friend without any cancellation fee.
- In case of cancellation of the program due to any gov restrictions due to COVID/ Weather, an alternate date will be provided for the same trip and no refund for that.
- In case you are not able to join the trek on the new dates, either you can send a replacement ( Without any additional cost) / You can opt for Wallet transfer,
- What is Wallet Transfer ?: The amount will move to LGFC Wallet and you can use that for any other trip. ( 3% fee will be deducted as movement charges) . Strictly there won’t be any refund to a bank account.
- Wallet transfer is applicable only for the case when a participant wont be able to join the new date on a postponed trip due to Pandemic / Weather situations
- The wallet transfer offer will only be one time , when the new date is announced. Further changes will be counted as normal cancellations and will be as per cancellation policy.
- Installments are to be paid before the due dates.
- In case when instalments are pending after the due date, the order will be auto-cancelled.
- There will be no refund in case of auto cancellation due to nonpayment of installments.

FAQs
The fee will be the same as for Adults if you need 2 shared rooms. If any friends/ Family join you, then only you can take 3 sharing rooms. then the kid’s fee will be 75% of the total fee. ( This is applicable only if a kid is below 10 years ). 10 or above fee will be same as that of Adults. Note:- Food and all will be the same as that of adults.
